Technology vs Media

In class we were asked to discuss what we thought about technology and media. We were tasked to address if we thought the two were different, if they were synonymous, and what  is their role in society. These questions pose some difficult for me because I realize that they are both different with unique characteristics, but at the same time they are one in the same. In class we posed two trains of thought: a technology helps reaches a goal (anything can be a technology if it helps us attain a goal) and that media is any form of medium. To begin, I don't believe that anything that helps us attain a goal is a technology. To expand from the Websters Dictionary, a technology is a technical skill or application that helps us attain a goal. So, while, say math per se isn't a technology math behind a computer application that gives people the ability to type what they think in 30 characters or less is a technology. And, also a media. In my brief paper, I stated that in a societal term technology and media are synonymous and it's hard to seperate the two.

  1. Interesting. So is "the application of scientific knowledge to solve a problem" a definition of technology you agree with?

    btw...where are you other reflections?
